Tips as you begin your meditation practice!
When you start your practice, take time to remind yourself why you are meditating. Feel gratitude for setting aside the time to do this and remind yourself that there is nothing else that needs to done or figured out during this special time
Judgment is counterproductive. It is very common to wonder “am I doing it right?” Or to turn to habitual thought patterns – going through your “to do” list, or chewing on a problem. Then judging yourself for not meditating properly. Let go of judgment. Just be with whatever is happening and then return to your meditation. Meditation teaches us to just observe those judgments and not attach to them. The gift of meditation is that we find that we are much bigger than the ego, but inclusive of the ego.
Be comfortable. Discomfort can distract you from your meditation. Sitting or lying down is fine. Adjust your body to be as comfortable as you can be. If you have chronic pain or discomfort, know that meditation is one of the best treatments for that as attested to in numerous research studies. http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2014/04/treating-chronic-pain-with-meditation/284182/
Don’t give up. It may take a while to find yourself enjoying meditation. Remind yourself why you’re meditating and stay the course. I assure you that the benefits will surpass your expectation.
